OnePlus has long since shed the guise of a scrappy startup, operating now as a closely aligned subsidiary of Chinese megafirm Oppo. Perhaps as a result, the last few OP release cycles have been lackluster, but 2023 is shaping up to be a banner year. OnePlus has unveiled the OnePlus 11 5G, as well as the OnePlus Pad, its first tablet.
Unlike in past years, OnePlus is only releasing one device in the 11 series. While it’s built like a “Pro” phone, OnePlus no longer uses that designation in the name. The OnePlus 11 has been leaked repeatedly, so there are no major surprises. This device is one of the first to ship with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but it’s the standard version rather than the overclocked one in Samsung’s new Galaxy S23 family. You can also get up to 16GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. The focus on speed extends to charging, which maxes out at 80W with the included SuperVOOC plug and cable. That’s almost four times as fast as the latest Pixel phones.
The OnePlus 11 has another Hasselblad-branded camera module featuring a 50MP primary, 48MP ultrawide, and 32MP 2x telephoto. The camera surround is steel, but most of the frame is aluminum. It has Gorilla Glass 5 on the back (with a shiny, fingerprint-y finish) and Gorilla Glass Victus covering the screen. The display is a 1440p OLED with a 120Hz refresh rate, along with OP’s customary in-display optical fingerprint sensor.
This phone comes with Android 13, and OnePlus promises four years of security patches and five years of OS updates, matching Samsung for the best update guarantee in the industry. However, the software has taken on a serious Oppo ColorOS vibe, which isn’t a good thing in my book. It’s tolerable, and you can adjust to its foibles, but OxygenOS 13 makes me miss the OxygenOS of years past.
As for the tablet, we don’t have all the details yet. Although OnePlus is shipping the OnePlus 11 next week, and it’s up for pre-order now, it will be a few more weeks before OnePlus Pad is available to order. We do know that it comes fully equipped. You get the tablet, which sports an unusual 7:5 aspect ratio with a 144Hz refresh rate, plus a stylus and a magnetic keyboard case. Inside will be a Dimensity 9000 chip with up to 12GB of RAM. The 9,510mAh battery will provide up to 14.5 hours of video playback, and there’s a 67W SuperVOOC charger to juice it back up in 80 minutes.
The OnePlus 11 will start at $699 for the 8/128GB variant, and it’s $100 more for the 16/256GB upgrade. We don’t have pricing for the OnePlus Pad yet. If it’s priced as competitively as the OnePlus 11, it could offer an alternative to Samsung’s spendy Galaxy Tab S8 family. Even if inexpensive, the OnePlus Pad will face fierce competition from Apple’s iPad lineup, which starts at under $400.
