A new app challenges this by giving the Switch capabilities that are reminiscent of a beginner-friendly tablet. Courtesy of indie developer and publisher RedDeerGames, nOS (short for “new operating system,” not Nintendo) turns the Switch into “a surprisingly small personal computer”—and an adorable one at that.
nOS comes with a slew of handy and entertaining options. A simple to-do list allows users to keep track of up to 50 tasks (and place a star next to the ones that are most important). The app’s notebook function lets users jot down their thoughts on an iPhone Notes-style interface. There’s a calculator app, a cute puzzle app, and even an MS Paint-style app perfect for casual doodling. Users can customize nOS’s look by choosing from one of seven color schemes.

nOS is still just an app installed on the Switch, meaning it won’t actually change the console’s core operating system. Naysayers might argue that someone who owns a Switch likely also owns a smartphone, which can already do the things listed above (and far more). But for those who want to locally keep track of their Switch game backlogs or write down game notes, nOS appears to be a pretty decent compromise. The app keeps in line with Nintendo’s cheery design and simple UX, and that’s the point: Users were never going to find an Android or Steam Deck competitor here. It’s also a nice solution for kids in need of a little extra road trip entertainment.
There is one major caveat to nOS, however: its price tag. Though the app is on sale for $1.99 through Feb. 16, it’ll normally cost $39.99, which is incredibly steep given its capabilities. Sure, the app is both handy and fun, but it probably won’t keep users occupied for hours on end like games listed at a similar price point. If you can’t snag nOS before mid-February, it might be worth sticking with your smartphone after all.
