As is now custom before an Unpacked event, Samsung has published a blog post alluding to its near-term product changes. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5, Samsung’s forthcoming iterations of its vertical and horizontal foldables, will reportedly be “slimmer and lighter” than their predecessors. The post also hinted at adjustments to its Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Tab S9 series.
TM Roh, president of Samsung’s mobile eXperience (MX) division, wrote Tuesday that under his leadership, MX products must embrace three traits: “essential, innovative, and harmonious.” To this end, even the basic act of folding and unfolding a smartphone needs to be kept as simple as possible, which means shedding extra weight. “A difference of [a] millimeter in a device’s thickness may not sound like a big change, but every gram and millimeter in a foldable device requires an engineering breakthrough,” Roh wrote. “That’s why we’ve innovated to make our latest foldables slimmer and lighter than our previous generations.”

Those eagerly awaiting the new foldables were understandably upset earlier this month when alleged images of a Galaxy Z Flip 5 leaked. The images, shared by SlashLeaks user Leakspinner, depicted a Flip 5 with a surprisingly large “tear-shaped” gap when folded shut. More photos have leaked since then, this time depicting a Flip 5 that folds completely flat when shut with no hinge gap in sight. There’s no way to know whether either set of images came from Samsung. Still, fans planning to upgrade this summer hope the latter renders are as reliable as leaker Roland Quandt’s previous disclosures.
Roh’s pre-Unpacked blog post suggested slight changes to Samsung’s wearables and tablets. “Samsung Galaxy Tab and Wearables are designed in the same spirit,” he wrote, referring to the aforementioned design principles. “They work with each other harmoniously in an ecosystem that opens up a powerful connected experience, serving as a seamless extension of your needs, priorities, and unique personality.” While little is known about the Galaxy Watch 6 series, it’s said the 6 will be available in 40-millimeter and 44-millimeter sizes, with the 6 Classic available in 43-millimeter and 47-millimeter options. Meanwhile, the new Galaxy Tab S9 will reportedly be more water and dust resistant than the tablets before it—something a few people are already testing.
We’ll learn more about the Flip 5, Fold 5, Watch 6 series, and Tab S9 series on July 26 with Samsung’s Unpacked event.
